Experiences at Expertise Centrum “De Elzenhoek” in Ommen (The Netherlands)
Introduction
Expertise Centrum “De Elzenhoek” is a special education daycare centre situated in the small Dutch village of Ommen. It offers specialized support (physiotherapist, speech-language therapist, pedagogue, play therapist, physician, etc) for intellectually and physically disabled children and children with autistic spectrum disorders aged from 11/2 to 18 years.
The Place-it-easy has been trialed for some time at “De Elzenhoek”. Below the findings of a group leader:
“I’ve worked for quite some time now with children who have an autistic spectrum disorder. Meal times were quite stressful. Seeing all the different items on the table and not completely understanding their use made the children restless. They would move their plates around the table or tap on the table with their cutlery. We tried to solve this by drawing a “map” of the table on a large piece of paper showing where to put items like plates and cutlery. This didn’t really resolve the problem and of course a piece of paper isn’t very hygienic. The Place-it-easy changed all that. We’ve enjoyed trialing the various prototypes. By using the Place-it-easy the children are much calmer during meal times. And not only has it offered them structure, it has also meant more relaxed meal times for all the other children in the group.
The Place-it-easy is also very helpful for relief group leaders. It gives them clarity on how to guide the children during meal times.
We are very pleased with the final version of the Place-it-easy. A durable and hygienic placemat with clearly visible and tangible molded spaces for items and a slot for the communication cards we use. Plus it looks attractive and it is easy to clean.”
